County Success 2011 (1)

Congratulations!!

You may remember last year we hosted the Junior (U13s and U15s) Inter Counties event in Leicester. This year the County team travelled to Nottingham. For the first time in the history of this competition (about 20+ years) Leicestershire and Rutland became the overall winners!!

In previous years we have been 4th or 5th only!! (with Warwickshire, Derbysire or Nottinghamshire in the first 3 positions). The top four places were very close and our success is probably due to the performances of our U13 and U15 Boys - but this is the kind of event where every point counts - it is better to ensure we have athletes even if they are not in the top three.

It is hard to single out individual performances - the only individual "Athlete of the Match" award gained by the County went to Connor Griggs with his Shot Put of 11.21m.

Both our U13s and U15s Boys teams were outright winners in their age groups - well done everyone - particular thanks go to Kelly King, the Team Manager.

Our team is chosen from the top performers at the County Schools Championshps and therefore included several performers who are not track and field athletes. We also include athletes from our County Championships and those who have performed well over the summer (using the Power of 10 results).

This is a first for Leics and Rutland Athletics - the County Athletics Association is very proud of all our athletes - their parents and schools should also be proud. We hope we can build on this for 2012 and beyond.
