Junior Inter Counties T&F Competition Nottingham September 2011

For the first time in the history of this competition (about 20+ years) Leicestershire and Rutland became the overall winners!! In previous years we have been 4th or 5th only!! (with Warwickshire, Derbysire or Nottinghamshire in the first 3 positions). The top four places were very close and our success is probably due to the performances of our U13 and U15 Boys - but this is the kind of event where every point counts - it is better to ensure we have athletes there even if they are not in the top three.

Please see the pdf which lists all the results.
It is hard to single out individual performances - the only individual "Athlete of the Match" award gained by the County went to:
Connor Griggs with his Shot Put of 11.21m. Well done Connor.

CAU Inter Counties XC Championships

Please find below a summary of the reports from two of the Team Managers

From Paul Blissett: Things did not go quite to plan as both Girls and Boys U13 squads lost key runners due to illness the day before: Alfie Thompson and Hannah Cox. Best individual placing from the youngsters was Xander Tansey - 10th in the U25 Boys; Amy Griffiths (14th) and Mari Smith (16th) were well inside the top 20. George Bell did extremely well to finish 32nd from no 3 in the pen and Lucy Crooke's 32nd was another step forward in a very high standard race.

The U15 Girls achieved the best team result of the day finishing 7th, just a handful of points away from the top 6. There were a lot of solid performances but it was one of those days when very few raised their game. As it happens, Hannah's absence did not affect the U13 Girls chances - there were 3 outstanding teams well clear of the rest but worthy of mention was Helena Keenhan's 65th position as 3rd scorer for the U15 girls - that was an excellent run from her!

There was every chance that the U13 Boys would have been right in the mix had Alfie been there - once again the others packed really well with Ben just edging Sam at the line and George following closely behind - Alfie with George would have meant silver or bronze for the team but sometimes these things happen.

Just to draw down the curtain on 2011, could I take this opportunity to thank all the team for their support and I shall look forward to managing the girls' teams again next year. It was particularly gratifying that everyone accepted all of the close decisions that I had to make - as always I try my best to get things right and to be fair to everyone in the best interests of the team. The fact that I did not receive a single complaint helped enormously and added to feeling that, despite the work involved, it is all worthwhile!

It has been a pleasure and I hope that everyone has a good track season and continues to enjoy our great sport.

From Ian Wilson: I would like to close this year's event by saying," thank you and well done" to all who started on the day, to the reserves, and to the others who would have loved to be able to run but could not. The senior women's team finished 10th of 25, a solid performance considering who was missing, but not as good as their 3rd place in 2008.

From those entered we were missing Tara Krzywicki, Gemma Hillier and Clare McKittrick, had they all been available, I think our team would have been well in to the top 6.   I remain convinced that, as a county, we have the potential to finish in the top 3 as we did in 2008, it just needs the best nine runners to be available and fit.

On the day Gemma Steel and Hannah Whitmore continued their excellent running to finish 4th and 6th respectively. I have just seen on the UKA web site that Gemma has been selected for the World cross but Hannah has not.  So congratulations to Gemma and commiserations to Hannah.  It's the second consecutive year that Hannah has been passed over following the trial.  In 2010 Hannah finished 4th and UKA took the first 3 plus 2 others who did not run the trial.  This year Hannah finished 6th and UKA have selected 6 who were the first 5 plus the 7th finisher.   I find all this very confusing.  I am sure Hannah will be pleased to receive any support you can give.

It is interesting to note that in 2007, when our senior women finished 10th team, the 6th scorer, in 141st place, was Gemma Steel.  This just shows what can be achieved by organised, hard work.

We had 10 entries in the U20's team which is a significant improvement on the 4 in 2009.  On the day 5 started, the others being unable to run due to injury and illness.  All 5 finished and our team was 9th of 13, an improvement on the 12th, 19th, 18th and 13th of the previous 4 years.  Lucy Crooks, the County Champion, lead the team home and will still be in this age group next year as will Catherine Robertson who was in this year's entry, (those born in 1993 or later will still be eligible next year).

Thus with 8 of those entered moving to the senior ranks in 2012 there should be added competition to get into our senior women's team for this event.

For the record the performances were:-

Junior Inter Counties - September 11th 2010

Our U13 Boys were top of all seven Counties and they achieved the highest number of AAAs Standards at Grade 1.

Everyone performed "out of their skins" in front of a cheering home crowd - well done!!

We were a very close 4th overall (only 5 points behind 3rd place South Yorkshire) despite some last minute withdrawals and non-specialist athletes filling in so that we got some points in all the events this year.
